Residence Permits

The Residence Permit is a document issued by the Regional Directorate of Border and Migration, authorizing foreigners to reside and work in the Republic of Albania for a long-term or permanent period. No foreign citizen (except American citizens) can stay in Albanian territory for more than 90 days within 180 days without a Residence Permit.

Reasons for obtaining a Residence Permit include but are not limited to:

Detailed required documents per category include:

Digital Nomad:

Service contract, accommodation agreement in Albania, diploma.

Student:

Language certificate, university acceptance document, tuition payment proof, rental agreement, bank statement.

Intra-company Transferee:

Rental agreement, employment contract, diploma, agreement between companies.

Employee:

Employment contract with an Albanian company, accommodation agreement, diploma.

Self-employed:

Business plan, diplomas, accommodation statement, registration proof from National Business Center.

Family reunification:

Family certificate, accommodation agreement.

Real Estate Ownership:

Ownership certificate, bank statement, personal declaration for stay motivation, health insurance policy.

Retirees:

Albanian health insurance policy, criminal records certificate, pension income document, rental agreement confirming accommodation in Albania.

Digital Nomad is a foreign national working remotely from various locations, not bound to a specific office or headquarters, using mainly information technology tools.

Student is a foreign national admitted to a higher education institution in Albania to attend a full study program, leading to higher education qualifications such as diploma, certificate, or doctorate. This may also include preliminary preparatory courses as per national legislation or mandatory training requirements.

Intra-company transferee is an individual employed by a legal entity outside Albania, temporarily transferred to a branch, department, or sector within Albania. The transfer must follow a continuous six-month employment period or partnership immediately preceding the transfer.

Employee is an individual who agrees to perform work or service for another party (a person or company) in exchange for payment.

Self-employed is someone with economic interest and capital to implement a business idea expected to positively impact the economy.

Family reunification allows family members of Albanian citizens or foreigners with lawful residence to enter and stay in Albania to maintain family unity, regardless of whether the family relationship was established before or after the foreigner’s entry.

Ownership of real estate in Albania allows a foreign national to obtain a residence permit by proving ownership of immovable property in accordance with current legislation.

Retiree is an individual with retiree status under their home country’s laws who applies for a residence permit as a retiree in Albania.
